Epidural in Birth - Hi I'm Tracey Rose and I just got back from the Hypnobirthing Australia Conference where I had the pleasure of meeting up with world-renowned birth expert and author Dr Sarah Buckley.

Epidural in Birth - She was the keynote speaker at the event and had some very interesting things to say about the safety and effects of common interventions used during labour and birth, including the effects of epidural in birth.

Now, before you listen to what I'm going to share I want to warn you that it can be a little scary and may trigger some people emotionally, so please be aware of this.

However, I want to share this so that people can be FULLY informed and make educated decisions.

Sometimes medical interventions are necessary and the safest was to help a baby be born, but as I'll explain it sometimes isn't in the best interest for the mother or baby.

So what are the effects of epidural in birth ?

1) Reduces Oxytocin - reduces fear & triggers the parasympathetic nervous system that makes us feel calm & connected

2) Reduces Endorphins - which is a natural pain-killer

3) Reduces blood supply to the uterus and baby

4) Prolongs labour

5) 3 x more likely to need synthetic oxytocin ... pitocin ... syntocinon to speed labour up again

6) Increase in temperature

7) It inhibits the Ferguson Reflex - even if you let it wear off

8) It DOES cross the placenta to the baby

9) Often the baby is less alert

10) And ... cries more in the first 6 weeks

11) On average mothers spend less time with their newborn ... baby more time in the nursery

Now ... those effects of epidural in birth can sound a little scary and I want to assure you that we are all different and this may not happen to everyone ... and in fact an epidural may be the best thing for you in your birth.

Everyone is different and there are always exceptions to the rules.

However, in knowing this information about the effects of epidural in birth, it may be smart for you to find out more about how you can birth without an epidural.

This may be a scary thought at first, but then I want to share with you that THOUSANDS of women are giving birth comfortably and without epidurals all over the world everyday ... in fact I was one of them.

And before you say anything ... no, I don't have a high pain threshold or I'm not just lucky

I learned how to use my natural birth hormones ... which of some that are pain-killing hormones!

Yes, that's right ... we ALL have natural pain-killing hormones in our body, it's just that most of us don't know how to switch them on or off ... and do many things that actually make labour pain worse.
